Sudaporn Teja

(1986), Thailand

Sudaporn Teja (Thai: สุดาภรณ์ เตจา; b. 1986 in Chiang Mai, lives and works in Bangkok) is a Thai artist who intertwines stories of life with insights from social, political, and historical issues in the contemporary world. She is known for her exhibitions, where she seamlessly presents abstract art alongside conceptual art in response to both emotions and notions. Sudaporn started her early career by exhibiting abstract paintings and later expanded her oeuvres across installation, video, and photograph. The artworks frequently make references to primary research, real-life narratives, chronicle archives, and literature.

She earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Fine Arts from the Faculty of Fine Arts and Architecture, Rajamangala University of Technology Lanna and Master’s Degree in Fine Arts (Painting) from Chiang Mai University. She was amongst international artists accepted in Thaillywood residency, whose solo exhibitions were held at Serindia Gallery (2014, 2016, 2018), Alliance Française Bangkok (2014, 2019), Galerie Jean-François Cazeau (2015), The Meeting Room Art Gallery (2022), and Gallery VER (2023). Sudaporn has presented her works in numerous group exhibitions locally and internationally, including ART for AIR (2021), Bangkok Biennial (2020), SPECTROSYNTHESIS II – Exposure of Tolerance: LGBTQ in Southeast Asia (2019), Art Hsinchu (2018), Art Stage Singapore (2016), and PAD Paris (2014).

Born and raised in Chiang Mai, her family name Teja has a long artistic lineage dating back to the reign of King Inthawichayanon (1817-1897). It was Sudaporn’s great-great-grandfather, Oon-Teja (Luang Maneewan), who was a renowned Lanna vocalist and considered as one of the finest musicians in his region and time. Her great grandmother was also an accomplished Thai Kern craftsman, whose family made silverwares and various types of weavings. Sudaporn’s Lanna artistic blood runs thick. These abstract works are her calls from within, the expressions by which she chose as a professional artist. Sudaporn currently works at her private studio in Bangkok.
